Happy Dussehra! For most online stores, today also marks the start of the most important stretch of the year. Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, exactly 19 days from today, with Dhanteras on 6 November.
The stores that do well in this window aren’t the ones that suddenly work harder in the final week. They’re the ones that have their offers, stock, creative and follow-up ready before the rush. Here’s a practical, phase-by-phase Diwali sale marketing checklist from Dussehra to Diwali.

Days 1–4 (20–23 October): lock in the foundations
- Finalise your Diwali offer. Pick one clear offer: a percentage discount, a bundle, a free gift above a certain order value, or free shipping. One strong offer beats five confusing ones.
- Check stock on your best sellers. Running out of your top product in the final week is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make. Reorder now.
- Confirm courier cut-off dates. Ask your shipping partner for realistic delivery timelines for Diwali week, including for smaller towns.
- Build a Diwali collection page on your website that gathers gift-ready products in one place. Send your ads here, not to your homepage.
- Test your checkout on a phone. Place a real order on mobile, using UPI, a card and cash on delivery if you offer it.
Days 5–9 (24–28 October): warm up your audience
- Announce the offer to your existing customers first through WhatsApp and email. They’re your cheapest and most likely buyers.
- Start retargeting people who visited your site or engaged with your content in the last 30–60 days.
- Launch gifting content on Instagram: gift guides by budget (“Under ₹999”, “Under ₹2,499”), gift guides by person (for parents, for colleagues, for clients).
- Add trust signals to your product and checkout pages: reviews, return policy, delivery timelines and secure payment badges.

Days 10–14 (29 October – 2 November): scale what’s working
- Increase budgets gradually on ad sets that are hitting your target cost per purchase.
- Turn on Google Search and Shopping campaigns for high-intent product searches if they aren’t already running.
- Set up cart abandonment reminders on WhatsApp and email. Festive carts are abandoned for the same reasons as usual, just in larger numbers. Our cart abandonment guide covers how.
- Refresh creative so returning visitors don’t see the same ad over and over.
Days 15–19 (3–8 November): urgency and delivery
- Make delivery cut-offs visible everywhere: ads, website banner, product pages, WhatsApp messages. “Order by 4 November for delivery before Diwali” is a powerful message, and an honest one.
- Shift budget to remarketing and branded search, where conversion rates are highest in the final days.
- Promote gift cards or e-vouchers once physical delivery cut-offs pass. They let last-minute shoppers still buy from you.
- Respond fast. Assign someone to handle WhatsApp and Instagram DMs during peak hours. Festive buyers won’t wait.
- Prepare your post-Diwali plan: what you’ll pause, what you’ll keep running, and how you’ll thank customers.
Don’t forget the operations side
- Packaging supplies for higher order volume
- Festive packaging or a handwritten thank-you note for repeat-purchase goodwill
- Clear customer service replies for “Where is my order?” questions
- COD confirmation calls or messages to reduce returns, which spike during festive sales (see our guide to the RTO problem)
Frequently asked questions
When should an online store start its Diwali sale in 2026?
Many stores start announcing offers right after Dussehra (20 October), giving around two and a half weeks before Diwali on 8 November. Starting with existing customers and retargeting audiences first keeps costs lower.
What is the best Diwali offer for a small online store?
The best offer is one your margins can support and customers understand instantly. Bundles, free gifts above an order value, and free shipping often protect margins better than deep percentage discounts.
How do I handle delivery deadlines during Diwali?
Confirm realistic timelines with your courier partner, set a clear “order by” date, display it on your ads and website, and offer gift cards once physical delivery can no longer be guaranteed.
